Closet-Palooza: How to Stylize Your Closet

Having taken time to diagnose closet diseases, purge closet squatters, and classify and care for your fashion taxonomy, it is now time to prepare the display of your closet curation.

Element 1: Backdrop
Closets shan’t be an exercise in camouflage.  There needs to be a strong contrast between your clothing and your wardrobe.  White is a great starting point but a graphic pattern can also volunteer.
Experiment with old posters as wallpaper, or maps, book pages, or even fabric.

Element 2: Mirror
A full length mirror is required.  Ensure you have access to every angle of your figure, everyone else does.  Creative solutions include a collection of smaller grouped mirrors, reflective ceilings, or even shiny furniture.  In the end, nothing beats the power of a three-way mirror.

Element 3: Lighting
Whenever possible pursue natural light to illuminate your reflection but keep this color sapping thief away from your clothes. To illuminate your clothes, you want true color bulbs that provide sharp, clean, distributed lighting.  Chandeliers offer ambiance, but you may want to supplement with recessed downlights for directional light on your items.

Element 4: Hanging Structures
Straight sideways rods aren’t the only solution.  Expose your closet or just a few of your favorite pieces on non-traditional layouts. Expose your industrial, natural, eclectic leanings.

Up next is the final and ultimate reveal of the Bagley Master Closet.  Try to keep your fingernail out of your mouth.

Closet-Palooza: Get Your Closet Organized

in the process of assembling easyclosets.com organization

The Four Commandments of Closet Organization

1:  If you can not see it, you will not wear it.
Think of you every item in your closet as a tenant; it pays rent by being worn.  Your closet’s Boardwalk and Park Place are at shoulder height, in the center of your view.  Items designated to special events or an out of temperature season, belong in garment bags in the far reaches, or in storage bins above vision.  The clothes that best match your figure, complexion, aesthetic, and lifestyle shan’t be crowded out by underperforming free loaders.

2: Present Clothing with Boundaries
Clothing piles are like jello; they must be given molds.  Employ boxes, dividers, tension rods, and more to this purpose.  Continue to indulge your inner OCD with labels.  Take pains to express what is hidden beneath folds (ie cuts of jeans, sleeve lengths, etc.)

3: Honor thy clothing structure
Fold knits to avoid stretching them out, but keep the entire pile visible. If they roost in a drawer, stand fold them so you can see each player, not just the top fold. If they nest on a shelf, make sure there are no more than ten inches of items per pile and put the heaviest items at the bottom of the pile.

Shun wire hangers like Tineid moths. These clothing predators will create unsightly shoulder nipples.  Even plastic, tubular hangers are an inferior choice as they lack the power to hold a wide neck top or heavy denim.  Instead opt for a wooden hangers if you have the room or my favorite huggie hangers offering slip, crease, and snag-free protection.

4: Classify your clothing
Class you closet out by life roles initially: casual pants and casual tops, professional trousers and professional blouses, social dresses and social layers.  After your roles are zoned, you can pretty it up by sleeve or hem length and color: group like items together; color sort from dark to light, solid to pattern.  When a specific occasion arises you’ll know exactly where to reach.

5: Keep your Care Alongside your Clothing
Hamper, stain wipes, iron, shoe polish, keep your fashion first aid kit in hands reach of your clothing.  Even in travel sizes these sartorial salves will keep your clothing from imminent destruction.
