While I prefer china and silver for eating, I couldn’t travel without paper and plastic.  Use cut up cardboard boxes to subdivide your suitcase and pack categories of items in plastic bags, especially your shoes, it will save you from footprints on your silk chemise.

When it comes to hats, boots, or other particularly bulky or fragile items wear them as you travel.  This will protect them for disproportionate packing space and/or incidental crushings.
