6 months have been checked off my maternity calendar, and we are yet to settle the baby name debate.
The hospital white board has only recently been wiped clear of alternatives to Levi Sims, and they nearly evicted us from the hospital before a single option was circled. Now we are committed to selecting an appropriately masculine, yet significantly unique name. One that will be noticed, yet not shuffled past in a pile of job resumes.
levi sims, three months shy of 2 years old |
The options narrow as we come from a large family and are somewhat delayed on the baby bringing train:
- Ezra (taken by a darling nephew)
- Jude (on hold by a beloved sister-in-law, due a month before me)
- Eames (my bosom friend is naming her baby Ames in a matter of weeks)
- Oliver (taken by two dear friends)
coco noelle, three weeks shy of three years old |
With titles remaining, we’ve compiled the following hotly debated list:
- Owen Ethan (love a soft alliteration through sequential vowels)
- Jack Crew (simple yet classic enough to appear in a Dickons novel)
- Calvin Thomas (scientific undertones?)
- Oscar Andrew (like Wilde, not Grouch or Meyer)
- Henry Elijah (or possibly a french Henri)
What’s your vote? And do you have any other nominations?
Feed me fashionably fresh
Shannon says
Such a tough choice. It’s so hard when you love a name and someone you know uses that name. I actually love all the names you’ve selected. Maybe you should wait until the baby comes and see which one fits him? ๐

Gentri says
I love them ALL!! What a tough choice!! I agree w shannon, maybe wait until he arrives and then pick? You can even rule out a couple of the lesser favorites. ๐
Carlee, Almost Endearing says
You look adorable! My vote is for Calvin Thomas!

Love the name list! I really like Ezra, Calvin, and Oscar but I like slightly less common names. I agree with Shannon and Gentri- maybe wait til you see him? You look lovely.
Robin says
You look absolutely amazing and possibly have the most perfect baby bump of all time! Back to topic- I have my own Henry so I am clearly a fan, but I love Calvin. If my last baby had not been a girl she would have most likely been Calvin. Best of luck, I’m sure whatever you go with will me wonderful.
Susan Winters says
You know that Thomas’s middle name is Owen don’t you? I still say go with the Thomas. How often will they be togther? There is always Theo and Gary. Love you.
Eden says
My favorite is Calvin Thomas. And since you asked for ideas, and we’re not having anymore, here are some of the names on my list…
Haden
Hyrum Spencer (living in MO Hyrum is uncommon)
Talmadge Avery
Jacob Friedrich (pronounced free-drick not fred-rick)
Good luck! We were bucklng daughter #2 into the car seat as we finally decided on her name. With both girls it required seeing thrm to KNOW their name. #1 though took 30 seconds to figure out she was NOT Tara Brooke. #2 was harder because her name was not a favorite with either of us but on the list. 5 years later and it is definitely her name and I can’t imagine her with any other
Sew little time says
i like Owen and Jack. our boy’s names were Connor (or Conor, we hadn’t sorted the spelling) and Finn. didn’t use either as we had a girl! We do like Irish names though.
Charlotte Parker says
You look darling, Reachel! My #1 vote is Owen Ethan, but Jack Crew is also a favorite. I almost squealed when I saw your possible name list {if they weren’t already taken}. Ezra and Oliver are my favorites! Good luck on a name for baby boyfriend #2!
Kirsten says
Henry is pretty darn sweet (I have one, too — we call him Hal)!, but they are all lovely names!
And you look beautiful — especially with your little ones by your side.
Michael and Andrea says
Great names! Our baby is Elliott Xander. I thought X would be a fun middle initial. ๐
mommatojoa says
I love Henri Elijah best.
Names I like are Ezekiel (what I wanted to name my first son but hubby wouldn’t let me) and Zion. I like unique names!
Somers says
Calvin is an awesome name and fits well with the fashion theme you have going on.
Jenna says
We just named our babe Calvin (Calvin Anthony), so clearly I think it is a great name ๐ It’s classic, yet pretty uncommon. I have had one person ask me if it were spelled with a ”K”… which I blame on people trying too hard to be ”creative.” Good luck!
katilda says
I am glad I’m not related to your sister in law, because Jude is first on my list….and I still have to find a husband and get pregnant before I can use it. I’m a big fan of literary names. I would tell you what characters, but…a girl’s gotta keep some secrets. See now I’m not helpful at all. haha
Jaime says
I like them all! It’s so hard to choose. I would go through them and just try to get a feel for which is just right for your son. It’s hard. You look fantastic and I love your hair. It looks so effortless and beautiful.
Maggie says
First of all, love love LOVE your blue dress in those pictures. Almost makes me want to have a 4th, just so I can have a maternity dress that sweet.
My name vote is for Henri, the french way. The i ending echo’s Levi, and even Coco ends with a vowel, so they all flow nicely. Coco, Levi, Henri. My second choice would be Calvin. The C-sound matches Coco, but the V matches Levi. And it’s a great name. A different option that I liked but my husband hated: Lawrence. It would go well with Levi too, I think. Hope you enjoy the last part of your pregnancy!
Lyndsay says
Jack Crew jumped out. I can hear your voice saying it. But all are equally handsome. We’re also very choosy with the unique-ness of names. After Finn Gaven (his middle name being the Danish word for “the gift”), we’re all ready for another boy to grace our family one day. He’ll most likely be Aksel Ward. And you look unreal, Reachel. Perfectly round (and rather petite) belly, sinewy ankles. Well played, my dear.
Aileen says
I still really like Oscar and Dave likes Henry. But honestly Crew stood out to me when I looked at the list. BTW…your bootie is bangin!!!

Stop it.. You’re insanely beautiful at being pregnant. No fair. I’ve got swollen face and melasma happening right now. Not the best moments in life. ๐
I adore all of the names. I read them out loud with Coco and Levi and I really like Oscar, but all of them are fantastic. I think you’ll have to see him first. ๐
Beth Allen says
Oscar is still my favorite. And you are beautiful.
Crystal says
I don’t think you could go wrong with any of those names! I have a Lincoln and a Henry, but my favorite boy name is Louis. Unfortunately, my husbands favorite boy name is Clark and since we couldn’t have both, they vetoed each other out.

I love Jack Crew! It fits perfectly with your charming last name && it has four letters like your two other baby’s names(:
love, rosie

You are gorgeous! I like them all too. Good luck ๐

My boys are Theo and Lars so I freely suggest those. ๐ We have gone with short names because our last name is long–our daughter is Ida. We want a fourth someday and if it’s a boy I’ve already decided he needs to be Jack. I always wanted my kids’ names to be unique and Jack is not, but it’s so classic and strong and sweet at the same time. And I think it goes great with a string of uniquely named siblings.
If Jack is taken by then, my next favorite is Axel. And I love Oliver but it wouldn’t work with our last name.
Long comment, but I def vote Jack! Can’t go wrong. And J. Crew of course.
Eliza says
Have you considered Micah, or Amos, or Moses? In keeping with the Biblical flavor (Levi, Ezra, Jude)
Rachel says
I love Jack Crew. In fact I almost had one of my own, but he was Jack Parker at the last minute.
Carissa Rasmussen says
I love your dress! cutest pregnant woman ever. Found you through caroline armelle and I am so glad I can follow another fabulous blog! I love Ezra and Jude…in pondering boy names for our family we really wanted to make sure the kids names went well together. Ours are English names!

My vote from your list is Henry/Henri. It was on my list but my baby bug is a girl. My other suggestions are Silas, Finn and Milo.
Liz H. says
Jack Crew is going to remind people of J. Crew . . . but maybe you’re ok with that brand association ๐

Wow. So many great options. I like Jonas or Zeke. Buy any of these suggestions will be perfect. You look fabulous. The kids are adorable too.

Such beautiful and strong names! I agree that you have a great list to take with you and see which one fits best. NOW, do you have suggestions for a baby girl? We’re far from having a list ready and not so far from delivery day. Baby naming is proving to be much more difficult for a baby girl than it was to name our baby boy.

Oscar, Owen, Calvin, Thomas/Tomas, Hugo, Hugh, Trevor, Leo.

I love all your choices! I would challenge that Jack is quite common, though it’s a great name. I have just 2 suggestions: Arlo and Milo. Coco, Levi and Arlo seems to make a nice set.
Susan Winters says
I am liking Jack, but maybe Drew or even Andrew. Of course the choice is clearly yours and Andrew’s. miss you.

We have the same issues with our babies…hospital white board, nurses threatening us with bodily harm if we don’t “JUST PICK SOMETHING! YOU CAN CHANGE IT LATER!”… I’m partial to Owen, since that’s my first-born! (Levi was ironically my first choice for him but The Hub vetoed it. He wanted Ezra but I nixed that one.) Henry is about as masculine as you can get and still have some charm, so that’d by my #2! Good luck! And you look amazing.
Julie Stapley Manning says
Henri Elijah or Henry Crew
I like names that roll off the tongue, and these sound good when all three names are put together.
Owen Ethan and Oscar Andrew also sound decent when said out loud. ๐
Good luck.
TLeaves says
Coco Noelle is such a fantastic name. Since you’re playing with fashion names, Oscar and Calvin make sense. But keep in mind that rarely is anyone’s middle name said, so it should go nicely with the last name since you would be one of the few who understands the connections. That being said, Oscar reminds me of Sesame Street. Who doesn’t love Henri? I rarely hear it anymore. Jack is so ordinary and reminds me of the pirate. Perhaps Jason/Jay if you want Crew. I think Henri is a favorite.
TLeaves says
I meant to add Christian (aka Dior). It could be a biblical or fashion reference. But I still like Henri. Reminds me of Harrison Ford. How about Henri Ford. Thomas Ford is a designer.
Anonymous says
Owen Jack or Owen Thomas. But really Owen goes great with any of these other names as a middle.
And love Henry but not Henri. French Henri is pronounced “Awn-rey.”

I love the name Jack Crew! I’ve personally always loved the name Edison (after Thomas Edison) if I would have had another boy that’s what I would have named him. That or city names are cool too like Boston, Phoneix, Dallas, etc. Good luck with your name picking! You’ve picked some pretty awesome names for your little guy, congrats btw.

Hi, I don’t know you… found you through a link on a friends blog. Love the idea of a different but not weird name. Being “michelle”, and I’m 40 so the Beatles song was popular, and there are so many my age it.is.ridiculous! Anyway, I work with toddlers and currently there are ALOT of Jack’s and Henry’s. Just some food for thought on the name popularity. If you put social security top 100 into google it will show you the top 100 – 1000 names ranked by birth year.
Now that I’ve written a book I’m just going to suggest “Eamon”. It’s irish pronounced “ay mon”. Similar to Amos which you seemed to like.
Good luck!
Kit says
Um, J. Crew? I mean I like their sweaters, but not enough to name my kid after them.
Personally I’m an Oscar fan.

I love talking boys’ names (esp. since I have two boys of my own)!
I personally tend toward names that end in “n”. There’s just something about the way they sound when spoken that appeals to me – masucline, but gentle at the same time:
Nathan
Holden
Brandon
Benjamin
Julian
Gideon
From your list I like Ethan and Thomas the best.
Good luck!
Katherine Vargas says
I vote for Henry Elijah, but only because we did not find out if our little one was a boy or a girl before birth & if she’d been a he, her name would have been Elijah Henry. So I am partial to both names. lovely list of names
Mikaela says
Owen Ethan or Jack Crew highly appeal to me.

9All your options are good.
How about adding Atticus to the list? Or maybe Emerson? Good literary names ๐

I fancy the Biblical names for babies. My two favorite are Isaiah and Ezekiel. I find them adorable and noble.

It was fun to see you today! And oh, I’ve had Calvin as my top boy name for years and years…but no boy to give it too. I’m sure you will pick an wonderful name for your cute little baby.

Having two sons, the oldest being 18, my recommendation would be to give your son a name that would befit the captain of a football team. Teenage boys like solid and masculine names, and nothing that has a whiff of being metrosexual. My vote is for Calvin Thomas – it comes across as athletic, intelligent, and good looking!
Heather says
Don’t do Owen (or Oliver)- sheesh- sooo many of them lately. Henry is also very popular, but at least it’s a good one…
