Sultry Summer: Silk

The most important element of summer dressing is fabrics. So tissue the tweeds and felted wool. And lets talk about silk: so light its barely there, like wearing a cool, elegant breeze. Pair it with a pair of crisp, white pants and dark shades and you’re suited for summer.

    Summer?!? Where are you, Arizona?

    Oh, right. ๐Ÿ˜‰

For those of us up in rainy Oregon, we’re still wearing black pants and long, cuddly scarves through our cold, rainy spring.

Fashion question – I’ve always found that silk makes me uncomfortably sweaty in the summer, as it doesn’t breathe as well as cotton or linen. Is this just me? How do you deal with it?

The weight of the silk (measured in mm) makes a big difference in summer breathability. For example, Habotai silk is going to be much more comfortable than Dupioni silk. Look for a silk that is almost transparent for the best summer wear. If the weight is too heavy it will actually keep you quite warm since silk is a poor conductor of heat. Silk has a high specific heat so it heats up and cools down slower than other materials.

In general silk absorbs a great deal of perspiration without feeling wet. Like your fancy workout wear, it wicks moisture away from the body.

I thought the same thing…feeling and looking sweaty and hot in a silk blouse. Maybe I buy too much cheap stuff.

I would love to order the Fashion Package! Is that available for the single-mommy budget set? LOL I love the ideas I’ve seen on your blog, and I always find ways to treat myself to a few “special” little pieces of fashion heaven, but I am wondering what ideas you have for creating a chic look on a tight budget…. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the inspiration Reachel! I was even inspired to curl my hair and throw on a huge pair of beaded turquoise dangles so I could look as cute as you on a 103 degree day! I just recently paid my first visit to Anthro and found two lower figure friendly (I hope!) linen tops for summer in the clearance room at Dana Park.

I am working on it…it is so hard to find things that flatter for summer when it seems everything out there seems to have that peasant top vibe which is a terrible look on me. I am currently working on shopping in my closet and finding things that can be re-fashioned to work for me since they have not ever really worked. Shorten the sleeves. Add a waist enhancing subtle dart. That sort of thing. Or, turn totally useless tops into cute skirts for my girls!

I would love it if every time you featured ensembles like this post, you did one per figure type.

Again, thank you thank you Reachel!
